For my Sculpture: Independent Study, I wanted to focus on the concept of gaze, perception and the muse. After watching the film, Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Portrait de la jeune fille en feu 2019) dir. Celine Sciamma, I was impacted by the way fine artists work and the concept of gaze. As the painter’s gaze is at the model, the model’s gaze is at the painter. They both are doing the act of viewing and observing whether the artist realizes it or not. Hence, the mirrors in the installation. The viewer can see themselves in the mirror as a canvas on the easel, as well as seeing themselves in the face of the muse.
